Fire & Explosion Scene Examination
Complete fire scene examinations include photographic and video documentation, diagramming, excavation and scene reconstruction. Our investigators are experienced in utilizing heavy equipment and operators to facilitate selective deconstruction of unsafe structures without compromising the integrity of the scene or loss of physical evidence. Our broad experience provides our investigators with the knowledge and skills to manage large and complexed scene examinations involving multiple agencies.
Arial video and photography is used to document large scenes, unstable structures or difficult to access areas. Our drones are equipped to record in 4K video. Fire Pro Investigations’ Safe Operating Procedures ensure all scene hazards are dealt with appropriately and align with the associated regulatory bodies. Structural and environmental assessments are conducted as required to ensure investigator safety.
Consulting & Litigation Support
We assist legal council and other agencies in reviewing reports, documents, evidence and investigations produced by other experts to determine accuracy and completion. This includes the production of rebuttal reports and opinions based on the materials provided.
Electrical Systems, Equipment & Component Analysis
The examination of electrical systems, equipment, processes or components are conducted to identify the mechanism of failure, or other conditions resulting in the failure. Such investigations involve on scene and/or off-site examinations, review of maintenance records, review of applicable industry standards, evaluation of a standard of care, witness interviews and product recalls. Exemplars, circuit documentation and product literature is acquired as required.
Forensic Interviewing
Witness interviews, both written and recorded, are conducted to obtain information regarding pre-fire conditions and activities, observations of the event, fire department personal tactical operations and police involvement. Available social media or other video is collected when available. Information is compiled, analyzed and compared to determine relevance and reliability. Where language barriers may exist, translators are available and used as required.
Certified Accelerant Detection Canine
Our Certified Accelerant Detection Canine “Fritz” is trained to identify 12 accelerants and can detect extremely low volumes of fire accelerants more efficiently and accurately than humans, at levels that are at and sometimes beyond the sensitivity of lab testing techniques and equipment. Fritz travels across British Columbia with his Certified Accelerant Canine handler assisting Insurance Companies, Police Agencies, Fire Departments, Legal Counsels, uninsured companies and individuals.
Electronic Data
Collection of digital data including security video, alarm records, electronic fault data and power consumption records are used to develop timelines and identify activities leading up to and at the time of the event.
Evidence Collection, Examination, Handling & Storage
Physical evidence collected from scenes is documented, preserved, packaged and secured in our facility in Port Coquitlam. Detailed documentation is maintained to demonstrate continuity, from the time of collection until a file is complete and written authorization for disposal is obtained. All examination preparation, including radiographic imaging and metallurgical assessments, are conducted prior to any destructive examinations. Examination Protocols are developed and distributed to all interested parties prior to any off-site examinations.
Code Compliance
Applicable codes are reviewed to evaluate deficiencies in construction, manufacturing or procedures relating to the fire loss. These evaluations also give consideration to the standard of care exercised by any parties involved.
Training
Our ongoing training program ensures investigators are current with the latest fire investigation methods, materials and processes. In-house training includes extensive test burns on materials, appliances and equipment to observe first-hand associated fire dynamics and effects in actual fire situations. This process helps develop our investigator’s ability to identify credible ignition scenarios. Our program includes completion of industry recognized courses, seminars, webinars and online courses.
